September Picks

Last year, I declared September the rock-n-roll month of the year. There is a good chance that will prove to be true of 2017 as well. There are just so damn many good new records, it was a chore to keep it under 3 hours for the playlist.

It was also a good month for the hard stuff. There are some nice heavier rock albums this month.. if the playlist gets too rough, skip ahead, it will mello out later.  There are several by dude-bro groups (not that we should hold that against them ;)  and some riot grrrl, some hip hop, some old-timers grooves, some psychedelica, all over the spectrum.

I hope you enjoy it all as much as I enjoyed finding it.

Wolf Alice - Visions of a Life
It took a few listens to find the subtleties of this bands's sound, but well worth it.. very cool band. In the running for AOTY.

Roses UnreadVultures EP (August release)
Extra points for hard-rock/metal without excess screaming. this will be a contender for best metal of the year.

Happy Hollows - Concordia
softer synth rock, a good listen

Nothing More - The Stories We Tell Ourselves
video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6c8X_s1h9Y

Prophets of Rage - Prophets of Rage
Rage reformed with Public Enemy, what's not to like?

Stray From The Path - Only Death Is Real
a bit abrasive on the vocals for my taste, but I feel like this should be heard

Metz - Strange Peace
noisy in a good subpop way
audio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ku0rJjuXiTQ

Epica - The Solace System
I put this at the peak of the heavy wave. If you like symphonic metal, there are not many better than Epica. This will be near the top of the best heavy records list.

Ruby the Hatchet - Planetary Space Child (August release)
good for a late night groove session
audio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg-70O5xbRk

J. Roddy Walston & The Business - Destroyers of the Soft Life
good songs, good energy, check 'em out

Lee Ranaldo - Electric Trim
Good to see the Sonic Youth crowd staying active. I much prefer his 2012 solo to this one.

Larkin Poe - Peach
showing the southern roots on this one (Atlanta) .. ha, not that we should hold that against them ;). They had one in the top 20 last year, and are in the running again.

Sleeping With Sirens - Gossip
Is it just me, or do they get younger with each new release? These kids have spunk.
video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FYnizimf0s

Emily Haines And The Soft Skeleton - Choir of the Mind
softer than Metric, with similar song writing quality

...and many more...

which is your favorite? mine is Halflives (TeraBrite second)

MotorHead - Under Cover
Punk and Metal share a common ancestor in Motorhead. Not exactly a new release, this contains covers recorded while Lemmy roamed the earth.
video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J06yQb4lbPk

Halocene - We've Got It Covered, Vol 3
This band does a lot of covers. Even the name implies covers. I recognize 2 Paramore songs here, and some pop stuff. not really sure how much is really new here. and it has some kiddie pop, so.. just be warned. despite this, I do like this band, they've got spunk.
